Frequently Asked Questions
We receive lots of forestry mulching questions and we are happy to answer and educate! Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any additional questions.
We like to explain the main differences between our two services as follows: forestry mulching is a small investment in areas that you would like turned into lawn, with a cleaner finish that does not leave stubble behind, and is therefore easier to maintain in the future.
Traditional brush hogging is a cheaper, quicker option for areas that are not yet too overgrown, but you’d like to mow the growth down once or twice a year to keep it from turning into a messy forest.
There are higher horsepower brush hogs that may be able to cut down some trees, however they are not meant for a full day of dense vegetation cutting. The design of the brush hog will leave thick stubble behind, and also does not allow for the "back-dragging" method that we use with a forestry mulcher to grind the cut vegetation into smaller mulch chunks.
All methods have their pros and cons, and we are happy to discuss your end goals to help decide what may be best for you and your property!
For efficiency purposes, we typically will mulch trees 6” in diameter at breast height or smaller. We can do larger, especially for pine and other softwoods, however they will take longer to grind. There also comes a point where we realize larger trees may hold value if they are felled instead of mulched, and used for firewood, timber, etc.
Stumps will be mulched flush to the ground. You'll still be able to see them from a short distance away but they will not cause any issue when driving or mowing over them.
-->Need the root balls completely removed from the ground? We can help with that too!
Keeping the area maintained (we recommend brush hogging once or twice a year at the very least) will hamper the trees and brush from growing back and flourishing. If the area is left unmaintained it will most definitely return to its pre-mulched state.
Nothing! Leaving the mulch is actually beneficial, since nutrients are returned to the soil as the mulch breaks down over time. We use special practices and techniques, as well as taking the extra time, to ensure that the mulch is ground up as much as possible. The pieces will be larger than typical garden mulch, but you should not be left with huge chunks! This makes the decomposition process quicker, and also makes it easier for you to maintain in the meantime.
In our experience, it is not necessary to use grass seed. There was once lots of vegetation in that area, and naturally, new growth will begin. The important part is that the new growth must be maintained. If the area has a thick layer of mulch or uneven ground, it may be easier to use a brush hog the first few times. In areas where the mulched vegetation was not as thick, using a lawn mower should not be a problem.
There are many factors that go into our pricing for forestry mulching, including but not limited to: type and thickness of vegetation, terrain, location of the property, current fuel price, etc. For that reason, we always like to set our eyes on a project before we even consider pricing. Once we’ve looked at the property and discussed your wants, needs and expectations we will prepare a proposal for you to review at your leisure. We find enough “hidden surprises” out in the woods- we won't let your final bill to be a surprise, too!
NO! It is a common misconception that cutting down the vegetation will speed up the forestry mulching process. In actuality, cutting down trees and brush to be mulched may slow down the process. The design of the mulching drum is most effective for cutting standing vegetation. Downed trees can be mulched, but they are sometimes caught and propelled backwards by the drum, causing us to spend time chasing after them.
This is a win for you and us- you don't have to spend your time cutting vegetation, and we don't have to spend extra time chasing after the cut vegetation!
We can mulch piles if need be, however the design of the mulcher is ideal for standing vegetation. When the mulcher gets up on a pile, depending on how large and dense the pile is, it may only mulch the top layer of vegetation and bury the bottom layer with mulch. For larger piles we would first use additional equipment to spread the pile into a more even layer. That way we are are able to grind up the entire pile.
--->If your vegetation is still standing, give us a call BEFORE you start cutting!
A forestry mulcher does not dig into the ground, so it will not level/grade the ground as a dozer would. We do however take care to spread or disperse any resulting mulch piles into a more even layer over the ground.
